Mentoring Handbook Update

Since it’s publication and ‘standing room only’ launch by the NZ Institute of Public Administration in Wellington, the book has been purchased by hundreds of organisations as well as individuals and has been profiled on TV1’s “Breakfast” and National Radio.

Courses, conference workshops and presentations based on the book continue to achieve high ratings from participants. There has been interest from a diverse range of groups including government agencies, the medical profession, private companies, industry associations, technical specialists, career counsellors, migrants and refugees, Pacific and Maori groups, youth organisations, and not for profit organisations.

How are people/organisations using the book?
The book is being used as a primary text and framework for ‘best practice” for both formal/informal mentoring. It is a ‘dip in, dip out’ book designed for busy people who need a reference to check in on from time to time, and has been written to ensure that it meets the legal, ethical, diversity, political and compliance issues which need addressing when services like mentoring are offered. It was critically reviewed prior to publication by key users and decision makers with very positive feedback.

What training applications does it have?
  • Management/leadership training for both formal mentoring programmes and also for managers and other staff who ‘mentor’ as part of their role. Mentor training is a great follow up to leadership training as it covers the micro communication, referral, networking skills and competencies which are much needed. It’s about how to best help others in informal conversations which occur in the workplace/community.
  • Protégé (mentee) training. Orientating individuals re how to assess and access personal/professional help for career development both within and outside the workplace. This is a very useful course to incorporate into induction or as a ‘stand-alone’ to update staff on latest trends.
  • To assess viability of introducing a formal mentoring programme into the workplace and/or the quality of mentors from outside the organisation
